London’s summer of sports is well underway, with plenty more action to come.
Riverstone enables its residents to continue living the lives that they love, with easy access to everything that London has to offer, including many of the world’s most thrilling sporting occasions.
Wimbledon
Wimbledon 2022 has, of course, set the sporting bar extremely high. The tournament provided a spell-binding fortnight of tennis, playing host to both established stars and exciting emerging talents. The ultimate winners demonstrated this point perfectly, with iconic, seven-times Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic taking the men’s title and first-time Grand Slam winner Elena Rybakina winning the ladies’ competition.
MLB Home Run Derby
A lesser known but no less impressive sporting occasion also took place on the same weekend as the Wimbledon finals. London has often been a preferred destination for USA sports organisations – with the NFL and NBA both holding regular games in the capital’s arenas - for some time and was the natural choice for a brand-new event, the MLB Home Run Derby.
The Derby involved an innovative format of baseball that brings more adrenaline and excitement than any standard baseball game, with 100 pitches per team, with points up for grabs for home runs, catches, and target hits. It was also a full festival day of fun and food, with hip-hop star AJ Tracey headlining.
South Korea and Mexico City have also been selected as hosts for the 2022 series.
UEFA Women’s EURO 2022
The summer’s sporting fun is set to continue with the European Women's Championship football tournament, which is taking place, as we speak across the UK, culminating in a Wembley final on the 31 July.
Women’s football is developing at an amazing rate. This year’s tournament is expected to be the biggest in the event’s history, with almost 100,000 international fans anticipated to attend matches, while a global television audience of 250 million-plus is expected to watch.
English Premier League Football
With the pre-season games coming to a close, the new football season is about to start. There are an array of teams that play in London, such as, Chelsea, Arsenal Tottenham, Crystal Palace, to name but a few and Fulham, which sits on the River Thames, just a few minutes away from our Riverstone Fulham residence.
The London Triathlon
Now in its 22nd year, the London Triathlon is taking place on the 7th August and is an annual event, attracting 30,000-strong crowds along the course. Participants have a choice of four individual distances or two team relay distances, with each containing a run, swim and cycle. Like the London Marathon, which takes place in October, the races take in many of London’s most famous landmarks including London Eye, Westminster, London Bridge and the O2.
The Hundred
The Hundred, with its exciting new cricket tournament format, with includes both men’s and women’s games, is taking place from 3rd August to the 3rd of September. Billed as “a blockbuster, must-see sport and entertainment event”, the rules are simple, 100 balls for each team and the one with most runs wins.
London’s most famous cricket grounds, Lords Cricket Ground and The Kia Oval, will be hosting matches and will also show live music entertainment from BBC Introducing, as well as other activities.
England vs South Africa Test - Men’s Cricket
Lords Cricket Ground is also hosting the men’s international cricket match from the 17-21 August between England and South Africa. The match is part of the LVE Test Series.
London is renowned as one of the leading sporting capitals of the world. With this spectacular summer of sporting highlights, it is easy to see why.
