At Riverstone, integrating with and supporting the local communities in which we operate is a core part of our ethos. With this in mind, we were delighted to support the annual Highgate Christmas Lights Switch-On by sponsoring the event, enabling it to continue while being bigger and better than ever.
The popular event, which was also supported by other local businesses, took place outside the Highgate Society in South Grove, hosted by television and radio presenter Alex Zane. With much fanfare, the lights were switched on by Lord of the Rings and Marvel ace Andy Serkis and BBC's Sherwood and Alma's Not Normal actor Lorraine Ashworth.
Speaking on the event, Martin Earp, CEO of Riverstone, commented: “Although we are relatively new to the area, we are delighted to have supported the Christmas Lights Switch-On, an important event for the local community that brings people of all ages together during this special time of year.”
“Ahead of the opening of our Bishops Avenue residence next year, our Community Hub in Highgate has proved extremely popular with the local community, who we have enjoyed getting to know through our series of events and initiatives. We extend our warmest season’s greetings and look forward to what 2025 has in store.”
A stone’s throw from Hampstead Heath, Riverstone Bishops Avenue is set to be a residence of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, which will bring Arts and Crafts inspired design to this beautiful ancient woodland setting.
A Conversation with Andrew Sulston, Chair of the Highgate Society
We also sat down with Andrew Sulston, Chair of the Highgate Society, to discuss the local area and what we can expect to see during this festive period.
Riverstone: Highgate is known for its close-knit community and active cultural life. How does the Highgate Society contribute to fostering this sense of connection, particularly during festive times like Christmas?
Andrew: The Highgate Society plays a central role in several ways to nurture the vibrant community spirit that Highgate is known for. During festive periods, the Society organises events that bring together residents of all ages. From the much-loved Highgate Lights Switch-On to the traditional Carols in Pond Square, these events bring us all together.
This year’s festive calendar also includes:
- A Sunday lunchtime concert featuring acclaimed musicians.
- The annual Highgate Watercolour Group exhibition at Lauderdale House, showcasing local artistic talent.
The events reflect the Society’s commitment to fostering community bonds, cultural engagement, and inclusivity, involving as many residents and businesses in Highgate and its vicinity as possible.
What does the annual lights switch-on represent to the Highgate community?
The annual Highgate Lights Switch-On marks the beginning of a period of celebration, drawing residents, local businesses, and visitors together to enjoy the season. Supported by generous sponsors and neighbours, including Riverstone’s sponsorship this year, the event is not only a visual delight but also a testament to the community's collaborative spirit. The Switch-On captures Highgate’s ethos: a village-like atmosphere and an important centre for North London, where tradition, creativity, and connection thrive.
At Riverstone, we’re preparing to welcome new residents to our Bishops Avenue location next year. How do you see new neighbours becoming part of Highgate’s community fabric?
Highgate is a community that warmly embraces newcomers, and new residents of Riverstone will find a wealth of opportunities to become part of its unique fabric. The Highgate Society actively welcomes all who wish to engage in local life, whether through volunteering, attending cultural events, or simply participating in neighbourhood gatherings. From attending the Society's talks and concerts to joining its guerrilla gardening or other community projects, new residents can easily connect with like-minded individuals and contribute to the shared goal of making Highgate a vibrant and welcoming place for all.
As we look ahead to future festive seasons, we’re excited about the prospect of our residents joining the Highgate community for events like this. What do you think they can look forward to most when becoming part of this wonderful area?
Future residents of Riverstone can look forward to a calendar brimming with diverse and inclusive community events that celebrate Highgate's cultural and social vibrancy. The charm of Highgate lies not just in its events but in its welcoming residents, green spaces, its history, its architecture, and strong community spirit, ensuring that newcomers feel a sense of belonging and delight in their surroundings. Explore the area and join local groups. We are based in 10A South Grove, effectively Highgate’s village hall, where you can take part in activities through the week and join us for coffee or tea and cake every Saturday morning between 10.30 and 12 noon.
What do you hope the Highgate lights switch-on will inspire in the community this year?
This year, the Highgate Lights Switch-On aims to inspire a renewed sense of togetherness and celebration among residents. As a much-loved local event it reminds us of the strength of our community connections. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the value of shared traditions and the importance of supporting local initiatives. By illuminating the Highgate High Street, the lights not only bring cheer but also encourage everyone to engage with and support the vibrant cultural and social life of Highgate and support its many great local businesses. The lights will also be an important backdrop to the Carols in Pond Square on Wednesday 11th December at 6.30 pm this year, where we will collect donations for two important local charities: the Winter Shelter in Pond Square Chapel and the Harington, a charity that provides opportunities for young adults with learning disabilities or difficulties based around gardening.
